Description: For this project I got to choose what I wanted to do. I coudl choose any medium, and any picture. I chose a sunflower, and uses the medium chalk pastels. First I found a picture of a sunflower that I liked, then began to draw the outline. After the outline was finished I began adding color. I started with a light yellow on all the pedals of the sunflower, then added a darker yellow for contrast in the flower. Once the pedals were done I added brown to the center with a little bit of green in the very middle. After I finished the colors of the sunflower then I began the background. I started with black, and then added shades of grey to give it a little bit of value. Once I got the background the shades I wanted it, then I added a lighter grey just around the sunflower to make it stand out of the picture.
Prints
Description: For this project we created three plates. Two of the plates were for practice too see what materials worked best to print. The third plate was for our actual print, and we put more detail into it. Once you create the plate with yarn, fabric, or other materials, you put lacquer over the whole plate. After the plate is dry there are two different prints you can do, intaglio and relief. An intaglio print you use acrylic paint and put it in directly on the plate, trying to avoid the tops of the materials. Because the press applies so much pressure there doesn't need to be very much paint. We used a spray bottle to wet the piece of paper we were printing on. For the relief print we took block ink and mixed two colors, then used a roller to spread it across the materials, and not putting it on the actual plate. When you print the relief you will only see the outline of the material.
Elements and Prinicple of Design
Description: For this project we created a positive and negative picture using movement, contrast, unity, and variety. By having a postive and negative picture there was contrast between them, but there was also contrast within the picture itself. By using dark pieces of magazine pages then I could use white paper as the forground. There was movement with the flowers because by making then smaller it looks like they are getting farther away. Also with the flowers they show unity because they are all flowers, but the background also shows unity because the strips are all going in the same direction. There is also contrast in the flowers because there are different types of flower.
Value Drawing
Description: For this project we created a close up drawing of a picture of our choosing. First we began by finding an image that we were interested in drawing, and printed it out. Then we began drawing the image in pencil, just getting the outline of it done, with no details. After we got the outline done we started the shading, and adding in details. Once the details were done we added color where ever we wanted to put it, but the drawing had to have at least 50% of it in pencil. I chose to give the water color, which made my turtle stand out a little but more. I thoroughly enjoyed this project, and although it I had a hard time getting the proportions right I am happy with my end result.
Book Binding
Description: For this project we created a sketch book. I'm going to be using this sketch book for my weekly drawings, as well as my personal sketches. I had to make a cover page by covering cardboard with canvas. Then I had my end page, and used water colors to design it. After that I had five signatures which are mad up of five pages folded in half, and sewed then into my cover pages through the spine. Once I finished that I designed my front cover page with personal designs. I enjoyed this project although it was a little bit challenging.
